Write Your Own

You’ve written your own cover letters for years. Some of them have landed you that needed interview (maybe even the job), and the others, well … who knows? If you’re still keen on writing your own, good for you! If you’ve never written one and you’d like to try it on your own, here are a few tips:

  1. Write in the active voice
  2. Focus on your unique skills (sometimes more than your qualifications) and how it aligns with employing entity
  3. Exemplify a unique knowledge of the employing entity AND
  4. Brevity is key.

Try something different

You are not always the best person to write about how good you are. It’s not because you can’t, it’s because you know yourself so well, you often minimize key elements that someone different may easily view as a strength.

Will a Cover Letter get you the job? Perhaps not. It could however go a long way in getting you the interview, where you’ll truly speak for yourself AND potentially secure an offer.
